Linde's popular and patented pulp washing with carbon dioxide technology improves the washing process by adding carbonate to the pulp. Carbonate has several benefits, including the conversion of calcium soaps into more soluble sodium soaps, which reduces COD, pitch, and foaming. The slightly lower pH reduces fiber swelling, which allows the customer to either increase the washing capacity of the filter or reduce the wash water use if production levels remain unchanged.
In many cases, it is possible for the pulp mill to realize a steam savings with the technology. Additional cost savings come from a reduction in defoamers, anti-pitch dispersants, and other chemical additives.
