In conventionally heated furnaces (fuel + air), heating the large amount of nitrogen that is inherent in the combustion air results in considerable energy losses to the exhaust gases. Oxy-fuel technology (replacing combustion air with pure oxygen) on the other hand, is an effective way of boosting furnace efficiency as the fuel is combusted with pure oxygen, avoiding the need to heat large volumes of nitrogen that plays no part in the combustion process. In addition to enhancing combustion, using oxygen also gives a cleaner melting process that is easier to control and minimizes harmful emissions to the environment.
